LASIK

Imagine life without the hassles of glasses or contact lenses. LASIK is turning this dream into reality for thousands of people around the world. LASIK is an acronym for Laser-in-situ Kerotomileusis, which means, “to shape the cornea using a laser.”  LASIK surgery corrects impaired vision by reshaping the cornea to reduce or eliminate refractive errors.

What is the procedure for?

LASIK surgery is a modern procedure which shapes the surface of the eye to help treat astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness.

How does LASIK work?

Your eyes focus using your cornea. A cornea is a part of the eye that acts as a lens, creating images on your retina. Think of it like a lens on a camera, focusing a picture on the film. For many people, the cornea is less than perfect in shape. That means the images you see are out of focus  (blurred) or distorted.  Your glasses or contact lenses shape the light before it reaches your eyes to compensate for the eye's imperfections. The LASIK procedure actually changes the shape of your corneas (lenses) so the images you see are crisp and clear without the help of glasses or contacts.

What happens in the procedure?

During the LASIK procedure, patients will lie back in a comfortable chair. A simple eye drop is used to temporarily numb the eye. Next,  the eye surgeon creates a tiny flap in the cornea with a laser. This is carefully controlled to leave a “hinge” on the flap. Next, the flap is gently folded back to provide access to the middle section of the cornea called the “stroma.”  This is the area of the eye which is precisely reshaped using a computer controlled laser tool. The reshaping will allow light to enter the eye in the correct manner to make your vision clear. Finally, the flap is replaced and the surgery is complete. Usually, the whole procedure only takes a few minutes to perform,

How long is recovery?

It’s normal for patients to experience minor eye discomfort for a few hours after the procedure.  Most patients will see clearly within one to two days.
